A New Era for Online Advertising
Posted on December 17th, 2007 by IBabel under Internet MarketingGoogle Adsense have basically ruled the online advertising realm for… A LONG TIME!

A lot of webmasters now (bloggers particulary) though are slowly turning back to good old direct advertising. One obvious advantage of direct advertising is the fact you keep 100% of the profit. No middlemen, no waiting for payment (hopefully!) and no terms and conditions.
You make the rules, you set the prices and you collect the cash. All of it
It’s aknowledged that Adsense has become a ‘cheap’ or ’second-hand’ form of advertising of recent times but I also think it’s fair to say Adsense will always rule to a degree.
With the recent introduction of video units. It shows Google are always expanding and experimenting to allow for a broader range of advertising to constantly improve CTR for both advertisers and publishers. They are always trying to move with the times, whilst keeping it simple. Which I think is one of the reasons they are so huge.
But how long will Adsense ‘rule’ for? do you think online advertising is slowly but surely turning it’s back on Adsense and contextual advertising? are the traditional methods of advertising being re-enforced?
Maybe the online advertising world will just keep turning full circle

Maybe this is a new era for advertising. I still use Adsense as I think it’s still a great form of expermentational income for webmasters. It’s definitely the best contextual advertising method for your website. But isit the best advertising method?
I don’t and wont be using Adsense on this blog or any blogs. Only on static content sites. I think with a blog, the level of interactivity and constant awareness stops Adsense being as effective as usual. Of course this is subjective, depending a lot on the content and the niche. But generically speaking, I think the best option for bloggers these days is direct advertising!
What do you think?

A huge number of people still use services like AdSense. With too many choices from content ads, video ads, radio ads I think people have more to choose from now.

That is a good point. You see more and more blogs going the direct advertising route. You even see some of the “big names” recommending that plan. Nice write up!

I think adsense has not yet fully saturated the advertising medium and that includes mobile advertising. Thats why Google is trying to conceive a new mobile platform just to capture this untapped market and with that adsense would still be plastered everywhere.

Yeah I know a huge amount still use Adsense. My point was is it slowly dying out. Obviously not day by day or even week by week but slowly you see less using it.
Like you said as well, more choice also contributes.

Direct advertisers are better but not for everyone. Every webmasters even the newest one can apply adsense easily without any need to find the right advertisers since adsense has a very large advertisers base on almost any niche.
Anyway, do you believe about google last issues related to “paid links”? Direct advertisers probably can be considered as paid links that will trigger google penalty. Whether it’s for your site or the advertisers sites.
I don’t want to say that we should put google as the god, but if it’s true, probably it’s google way to ‘protect’ their business.
“Adwords is the best advertising method since we don’t count it as paid links”. lol

To be perfectly honest. I don’t really care about Google. They are obviously the best search engine and Adsense is nice.
But they still take a cut from you and don’t even let you know how much. They value their advertisers more than their publishers and can sometimes be unfair with click fraud without properly giving consideration to each individual case.
On the paid links front… I think ok it’s Google protecting their business. But to get a decent rank you need decent links and what not, I know they can be achieved naturally but still…
And as for confusing advertisements for PAID LINKS, ok technically they are. But it’s wrong, a visual advertisement for example is to aid general awareness and traffic, not rank. So they should find someway of assessing things more accurately.

There are too many scams online and little trust between webmasters. Anyone who’ve spent much enough online should have bad experience when dealing with strangers online (yes, even if they have a successful website). Personally, I met a few bloggers who put up a NO FOLLOW tag on my text link ads; some even take down my banners 3 months before the expiration! — which explains why advertising agents like Google (or affiliate network like CJ, or Shareasale) is irreplacable.

I disagree. Yes there are dishonest advertisers online, but it’s just about finding the right ones. Advertise with people with a reputation or at least appear to be repitable. Then again, if you pay your advertiser through PayPal for example, you can get your money back if the service is not as promised. It’s certaintly not for sue but is possible. PayPal will investigate.
For advertising I agree Google is a safer option, but from a publishers point of view. Direct advertising is much much better. For one you keep all the profits for ad sales, meaning no cuts given out to already billion dollar companies aka Google. Google don’t even allow you the courtesy of telling you how much they take. Also you manage all your own ads and have complete editorial control over who advertises. With Adsense, you don’t.
