Adsense isn't the only answer these days. Direct advertising is the most profitable I think all round, it's just getting the advertisers in the first place. Also, no need to spend money on a template, there are plenty of great free ones, much better than the one you currently have. I agree about the design, but for the moment I can't justify spending money on it so I need to find a free template that works well. I'm not sure what you mean by the ads in the header distort it? The header looks fine to me without distortion, or do you mean it's not pleasing to the eye because the ads don't fit in well?
