WordPress Users: Backup Your Blog
Posted on January 23rd, 2008 by Nick Sullivan under Blogging, wordpress
Today was the first time I’ve actually ever backed up this blog.
Backing up your blog should be done on a monthly basis, just incase anything unexpected happens to your database.
Most issues can usually be fixed anyway but imagine something drastic happened and you lost all of your posts.
All those hard written articles… gone!
I’m lazy when it comes to things like this, type of thing I can never be bothered to get round to doing. But since I also upgraded today thought I may as well get it done.
Went with the easiest possible option for backing up as couldn’t be bothered with the manual method… even though that’s easy to. Anyway…
Check out this plugin - it’s one click download backup:

Download

Installation
1. Download zip folder.
2. Upload and extract in the plugins folder in your Wordpress directory.
3. Activate the plugin in the plugin menu on your Admin Wordpress panel.
4. Go to Manage and click Backup, then it’s just a case of a one click download.
Simple as that!
You can either download to your desktop or you can save it to your server for you to grab later.
You can also configure it to send the backup to your email address. You can have scheduled times also, so you could even have a daily backup if you’re paranoid ![]()

I use this cool little plugin all the time, sometimes even daily. I don’t think I can handle my blog disappearing especially after all the popularity it’s constantly getting. Good move backing up your blog for the first time.

that is a great plugin. I’m going to backup a couple of my blogs tonight

For people like me with a site coded from scratch, installing a plugin isn’t an option. But making database backups is incredibly easy using mysql’s “mysqldump” function. Comes in very handy!
Backing up is ALWAYS important for any database driven site.

@ Webkinz world - Don’t just do it tonight. If you can, do it everyday!

Yes indeed. Well I would never code a blog from scratch. WordPress is the king of blog assortment.
I always make my own sites but for blogs WP is awesome.

What are your other sites anyway?
January 23rd, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Static content sites. Sites I built ages ago. I own about 23 domains, not all complete though - far from it. I sold one site last year.
Nothing big, just well preserved sites.
Look out for my upcoming project though
I’m gna launch here. I think you should like it.

Awesome.. I will use it at my ‘wordpress’ blog…
How about blogger.com ?? Do u know about it??
January 24th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Yeh, I wouldn’t use it. It’s hosted software so you need to use a .blogspot.com sub-domain. WordPress is the best solution for blogs period in my opinion.

Hey Nick,
As an experienced php programmer who has been hacked a few times - I would HIGHLY suggest using some form of CRON JOB for backups so that your blog is backed up each and every night/day…
I recently upgraded my blog, only to find out that it had been hacked 20 minutes later… on Christmas Morning. Yikes. There were hundreds of others that were hacked on the same day which was obviously created by a Script Kiddie who found a flaw with a Wordpress Plugin.
So, if you can’t figure out some sort of Cron Job for the site, at least make sure you back up your site at the end of each day! =)

Hey Clint, yeh the backup plugin has a built in cron job of sort. You can get updates to yourself everyday by email if you like.
Best way to avoid plugin hacks is to always get the latest plugin updates. Most people don’t bother updating.
I used to have a .htaccess on my admin to only allow my ip access. Will do that again as well. I might get my php coder to fully protect it as well.
But I think as long as you have daily updates and .htaccess protect in place, hackers are pretty harmless against you. Unless it’s a pro hacker they won’t get past this and as most pro’s are using their skills for more useful or beneficial things you probably won’t get any experienced enough to bother hacking a blog.
Sorry to hear you got hacked! that would be annoying. Completely pointless, hackers who just hack to trash things piss me off. No gain, just annoying.

Good work, I love seeing plugins that I didn’t know about! Quite valuable I am sure.
