You can get updates to yourself everyday by email if you like. Best way to avoid plugin hacks is to always get the latest plugin updates. Most people don't bother updating. I used to have a .htaccess on my admin to only allow my ip access. Will do that again as well. I might get my php coder to fully protect it as well. But I think as long as you have daily updates and .htaccess protect in place, hackers are pretty harmless against you. Unless it's a pro hacker they won't get past this and as most pro's are using their skills for more useful or beneficial things you probably won't get any experienced enough to bother hacking a blog.
